If you have spoken to more than one AI surveillance vendor, there is a reasonable chance at least one of them told you that you would need to replace your cameras.

Sometimes that is genuine technical advice. Often it is not.

The idea that AI requires new hardware is one of the most persistent misconceptions in the security industry, and it costs organisations real money. Camera replacement is expensive. Installation is expensive. And some of the "AI-ready" camera vendors push come with subscription models that raise a question you should be asking before you sign anything: what happens to your cameras if you stop paying?

This post covers what AI surveillance actually requires from your camera infrastructure, when an upgrade is genuinely necessary and what to look out for when a vendor tells you that you need to start from scratch.

What AI surveillance actually needs from your cameras

AI video analytics can run directly on cameras, on servers or in the cloud. Camera-based analytics can provide useful data such as person and vehicle classification, clothing attributes and searchable metadata. Vendors so integrate these capabilities with platforms like Genetec Security Center and Milestone XProtect.

However, AI cameras have limitations. Performance depends on the model, analytics can be difficult to combine across different vendors and the cameras are generally more expensive. They can also become outdated faster than standard cameras, even though most organisations expect their cameras to remain installed for eight to ten years.

Server-based analytics offer more flexibility because the AI can be upgraded without replacing the entire camera estate. This makes it easier to support mixed camera brands, improve performance over time and scale across large surveillance networks.

When you do need to upgrade

Being direct about this matters. There are situations where camera hardware genuinely limits what AI can do, and it is worth knowing what they are.

Analog cameras without an encoder. True analog cameras, the kind connected via coaxial cable to a DVR rather than an NVR, do not produce an IP video stream. AI analytics software cannot process analog signals directly. If your site is still running pure analog infrastructure, one of your options is to replace the cameras with IP cameras, or install analog-to-IP encoders that convert the signal and feed it into your VMS. 

Very low resolution cameras. AI detection accuracy depends on image quality. Cameras running at very low resolutions, particularly older models, may produce footage where the AI struggles to distinguish between people, vehicles and other objects with enough confidence to generate reliable events. In those cases, an upgrade to modern resolution cameras will improve results. This is not a dealbreaker for every use case, but it is worth flagging.

Cameras with no network connectivity. If cameras are not connected to a network at all and footage is only recorded locally to a DVR with no accessible stream, integration with an AI platform requires either a network connection or hardware replacement. This is rare in commercial deployments but still exists in older installations.

If none of those apply to your site, your cameras are almost certainly compatible with AI surveillance software already.

Why some vendors tell you otherwise

There are two reasons a vendor might tell you that you need new cameras, and one of them is legitimate.

The legitimate reason is technical. Their specific platform may have genuine hardware dependencies, compatibility limitations or minimum spec requirements that your existing cameras do not meet. That is a product limitation worth understanding before you commit.

The other reason is commercial. Camera sales are margin. Installation is billable. Proprietary hardware creates lock-in. A vendor who sells you cameras, installs them and ties them to their AI platform has created a relationship where your security infrastructure depends on their continued goodwill and your continued payments.

This brings up a question that is worth asking any vendor selling you hardware alongside software: what happens to your cameras if you cancel the contract?

With standard IP cameras connected to a standard VMS, the answer is simple. You own the cameras. You own the VMS licence. You can switch AI software providers without touching a cable. Your infrastructure stays yours.

With proprietary "AI cameras" tied to a vendor's cloud platform, the answer is less clear. Some of these devices are designed to operate only within the vendor's ecosystem. Cancel the subscription and the cameras may stop functioning as anything more than basic recorders, if they function at all. You have paid for hardware that you do not fully control.

How to check if your cameras are compatible

If you are unsure, the right vendor will tell you directly. Give them your camera make, model and VMS platform and ask for a straight answer on compatibility. A good vendor will confirm it quickly or flag a genuine limitation without trying to sell you hardware you do not need.

Summary

You do not need to replace your cameras to use AI surveillance. In most commercial deployments with modern IP cameras and a standard VMS, the infrastructure you already have is sufficient.

Upgrades make sense in specific situations: true analog cameras without encoders, very low-resolution cameras that limit detection accuracy and cameras with no network connectivity. Outside of those scenarios, camera replacement adds cost and complexity without adding capability.

When a vendor tells you otherwise, ask why. Is there a genuine technical reason, or is it a commercial one? The answer tells you a great deal about how the relationship that follows will work.
